NEWBERG, Ore.
– Pounding out five home runs, including two to go along with
six RBIs by Tommy Whalen, the Concordia University-Portland
Cavaliers spoiled the George Fox University Bruins' home
opener with a 13-8 rout in a non-conference baseball game Friday
afternoon here at Morse Field.
The Cavs jumped on Bruin starter Nick Bratney (0-1) for three in
the 1st and never looked back. Ben Lanier, Jimmy
Rudig, and Whalen hit consecutive singles to open the game,
producing one run, Rudig stole third and scored on a throwing
error, and Brad Himes singled in Whalen for an unearned run.
The Bruins got one back in the home half when Matt Wyckoff drew a
one-out walk, went to third on a single by Bo Thunell, and scored
on a wild pitch by Concordia ace Ross Conway
(2-0). The Cavs answered with four more in the
2nd to knock Bratney from the game, the big blow an inning-capping
three-run homer by Whalen.
George Fox got three in the 3rd, starting with a lead-off walk to
Kyle Kuenzi and an RBI triple by Wyckoff.
Thunell singled in Wyckoff and later scored on a single by Todd
Siler. Conway was lights out after that,
however, retiring 13 in a row before being relieved to start the
8th by Jarrod Castrejon.
J.J. Berg touched Bruin reliever Travis Schroeder for a solo home
run in the 4th, and Whalen doubled in a run in the
5th. Schroeder struck out four Cavaliers in a
row, including the side in the 6th, but gave up back-to-back homers
to Rudig and Whalen in a three-run Concordia
7th. Lanier hit a solo homer off Brian Ranta in
the 9th.
Dan Winterstein homered for the Bruins in the 8th off Castrejon,
and they added three more in the 9th to make the score more
respectable. Kyle Seymour drove in one run with
a ground out and Winterstein singled in a pair before Steven Taft
got the final out.
Thunell, Winterstein, and Perry Knudson each had two hits for the
Bruins, who collected 10 safeties in all. The
Cavs stroked 17 hits, with Whalen going 4-6, Lanier 3-6, and Rudig,
Berg, Himes, and Brady Miletich getting two each.
Conway scattered six hits in 7.0 innings, fanning six and walking
two. Schroeder, though touched for five runs in
5.1 innings, struck out nine and walked only one.
George Fox (2-3) and Concordia (4-2) will meet again Saturday at
12:00 noon. Concordia is also playing in the Jim
Doran Auto Group Spring Classic at Linfield College during this
weekend.
