Bruins Drop All but One Match over Weekend to the Whits

NEWBERG, Ore. – Playing at home over the weekend against two Northwest Conference women's tennis teams which have yet to lose in league play, the George Fox University Bruins fell to the Whitworth University Pirates 9-0 on Friday and to the Whitman College Missionaries 8-1 on Saturday here at the GFU campus courts.


Against Whitworth (4-2, NWC 3-0) on Friday, the Bruins' Corinne Borrelli and Mollee Robinson fell to the Pirates' Katie Staudinger and Alli Marshall 8-2 at No. 1 doubles, Courtney Banks and Betsy Ann Penman dropped an 8-3 decision to Stephanie Reardon and Erica Bosman at No. 2, and Lauren Miller and Thalia Delgado were ousted by Claire Hemming and Siri Carlson 8-3 at No. 3.


Singles winners were Whitworth's Rachel Burns over George Fox's Borelli 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1; Mya Towne over Banks 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2; Bosman over Robinson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3; Staudinger over Penman 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4; Justine Hays over Liliya Abildayev 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5; and Janell Talbot over Miller 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.


Delgado picked up the Bruins' lone win of the weekend when she defeated Whitman's Charlotte Scott 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.  Banks pushed Divneet Kaur to three sets at No. 3 singles, falling 6-2 in the first set before coming back to take the second 6-4, but dropping the third-set tiebreaker 10-6.


The rest of the match was all Missionaries, starting with the doubles.  Elise Otto and Margo Lentz knocked off the Bruins' Robinson and Borrelli 8-3 at No. 1, Kaur and Katie Oost defeated Banks and Penman 8-5 at No. 2, and Hadley DeBree and Jacquie Frank dropped Miller and Shanna Lesire 8-3 at No. 3.


The other singles matches won by Whitman (4-1, NWC 4-0) were Otto over Robinson 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1; DeBree over Borrelli 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2; Oost over Lesire 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4; and Lentz over Penman 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5.


George Fox (1-3, NWC 1-3) hosts seven-time defending conference champion Linfield College Friday at 2:00 p.m. in its next match.
