WALLA WALLA, Wash.
– In a rare mid-week Northwest Conference contest, the George
Fox University Bruins dropped a women's tennis match 8-1 to
the Whitman College Missionaries, ranked 11th in the NCAA Division
III West Region, Tuesday afternoon here at the Bratton Tennis
Center.
Whitman's Margo Lentz and Emily Rolston swept through the
No. 1 doubles 8-0 over Corinne Borrelli and Mollee Robinson, but
the visiting Bruins put up a strong fight in the other two
doubles. At No. 2, the Missionaries' Katie
Oost and Amanda Alexander were pushed hard by Courtney Banks and
Betsy Ann Penman before prevailing 8-5. At No.
3, Whitman's Jacquie Frank and Alex Robinson hung on for a
9-8 (7-4) win over Shanna Lesire and Liliya
Abildayev.
Penman secured the Bruins' one win with a split-sets victory
over Robinson 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) at No. 5
singles. Whitman winners in the other singles
were Hadley DeBree over Banks 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1; Oost over Borrelli
6-1, 6-1 at No. 2; Lentz over Robinson 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3; Rolston
over Lesire 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4; and Frank over Abildayev 7-6 (10-8),
6-0 at No. 6.
George Fox (2-8, NWC 2-7) is back at home Saturday, hosting
Pacific Lutheran University at 11:00 a.m.
Whitman (7-3, NWC 7-2) visits Lewis & Clark College Friday at
4:00 p.m.
