BEAVERTON, Ore. – Picking
up their first win of the season after 10 straight losses, the
Pacific Lutheran University Lutes edged the George Fox University
Bruins 5-4 in a Northwest Conference women's tennis match
that was moved here to the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center Saturday
afternoon from the wet GFU campus courts.
The Bruins started off in fine fashion, taking two out of three
matches in doubles. Courtney Banks and Betsy Ann
Penman defeated the Lutes' Mary Stang and Heidi Weston 8-4 at
No. 2, and Shanna Lesire and Liliya Abildayev dropped Ali Burnside
and Caitlyn Hoerr 8-3 at No. 3. PLU's
doubles win came at No. 1 as Ashley Brooks and Ashley Coats teamed
up to defeat GFU's Mollee Robinson and Corinne Borrelli 8-2.
George Fox could capture only two of the six singles, however,
allowing Pacific Lutheran to take the match by a
point. The Bruins' two wins came at No. 2,
where Borrelli edged Coats 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), and at No. 4, where
Lesire knocked off Weston 6-2, 7-5.
The rest of the singles, and thus the match, went to the Lutes as
Brooks ousted Robinson 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1; Burnside nipped Banks
4-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3; Jessica Wilson dropped Penman 6-3, 7-6
(7-5) at N o. 5; and Stang stung Abildayev 7-5, 6-1 at No. 6.
Georg e Fox (2-9, NWC 2-8) visits Pacific University Sunday at
12:00 noon, while Pacific Lutheran (1-10, NWC 1-9) hosts Lewis
& Clark College next Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
