TACOMA, Wash. – After dropping two of the
three doubles matches, the George Fox University Bruins stormed
back to sweep all six singles matches for a 7-2 victory over the
University of Puget Sound Loggers in a Northwest Conference
women's tennis match Friday afternoon here at the UPS Tennis
Pavilion.
The Loggers opened up by winning the
top two doubles, Sam Taylor and Madison Holtz edging the
Bruins' Mollee Robinson and Corinne Borrelli 8-6 at No. 1,
and Alissa Wolf and Ada Yu topping Courtney Banks and Betsy Ann
Penman 8-4 at No. 2. The Bruins' comeback
started with a win at No. 3 doubles as Shanna Lesire and Liliya
Abildayev shaded Ashley Dombrow and Devin Fields 8-4.
The singles matches proved to be quite competitive as three of
them split sets, but the Bruins persevered in every
one. Borrelli took the measure of Taylor 6-4,
6-7, 6-1 at No. 1; Robinson prevailed over Wolf 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 at
No. 2; Banks beat Holtz 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3; Lesire downed Yu 6-2,
6-1 at No. 4; Penman pounded Rochelle Hebert 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5; and
Abildayev nudged Jessica Gauger 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) at No. 6.
George Fox (2-5, NWC 2-5) heads home to host the College of Idaho
in a non-conference match Saturday at 6:00 p.m. at the Tualatin
Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton, Ore. Puget
Sound (1-6, NWC 1-6) hosts Lewis & Clark Saturday.
