NEWBERG, Ore. – Maintaining the hold they have on
first place in the Northwest Conference, the George Fox University
Bruins escaped any weather-related problems as well as the Lewis
& Clark College Pioneers in sweeping a baseball doubleheader
11-2 and 13-7 Saturday afternoon here at Morse Field.
The Bruins stretched their winning streak to seven as they
improved to 9-3 overall and 6-0 in the
conference. The Pioneers fell to 1-9 overall and
1-5 in league play.
In the opener, the Bruins banged out 15 hits, nine in the first
two innings while scoring eight times, to back the complete-game
pitching of righthander Nick Bratney (2-1). The senior scattered 10
hits, only once retiring the side in order but pitching out of most
jams he got into. The only runs he allowed came
on a two-run double by Sam Morgan in the 5th that scored Sam Holman
and Parker Dave, but both were unearned due to a Bruin error that
prolonged the inning. He fanned two and walked
one.
The Bruins jumped on Pioneer ace Alex St. Pierre (1-1) in the 1st,
collecting six hits to score four times. Dan
Winterstein singled in Kyle Kuenzi with the first run, Seth
Anderson drove in Bo Thnell and Pat Bailey with a single, and
Winterstein scored on a hit by Taylor Hunter.
The Bruins added four more in the 2nd, the big blow a three-run
home run to left by Bailey, his fourth of the season, and Anderson
delivered Winterstein with a sacrifice fly.
Brent Trask and Hunter walked to lead off the 5th and each later
scored on infield grounders that made it 10-2, and the Bruins added
a final run in the 8th on singles by Anderson, Trask, and Hunter.
Winterstein and Anderson each had three hits for George Fox,
Anderson driving in three, while Matt Wyckoff and Trask had two
safeties apiece. Dane was the only Pioneer with
two hits.
In the nightcap, righthander Shane Dalgleish (4-0) settled down
after a shaky first two innings in which he allowed four runs to
complete six innings and pick up the win. The
only run he allowed from the 3rd through 6th innings was a solo
home run by Jordan Wlodarczyk, his first of the season, in the
5th. The Bruin senior starter spaced seven hits
while allowing five runs, four earned, with two strikeouts and
three walks.
The Pios picked up an unearned run in the 1st on a single by Dame,
two Bruin errors, and a sacrifice fly by Wlodarczyk, but the Bruins
got two in the home half, Winterstein doubling home Kuenzi and
Thunell who had both drawn walks.
The visitors regained the lead in the 2nd as Kevin Condon singled
in Ryan Kostecka, Tucker Laurence scored on a force out by Dane,
and Holman scored on a double steal with Dane.
Back came the Bruins in the bottom of the frame as Wyckoff jumped
all over a 3-2 curve ball from L&C righty David La Douceur
(0-4) and sent it over the right-center fence
for a go-ahead three-run blast, his first of the year.
The Bruins added three more in the 3rd, Winterstein scoring the
first run on a wild throw to third on Michael Woo's attempted
sacrifice. With runners at second and third,
Hunter laid down a squeeze bunt up the first-base line to score
Anderson, and Woo, never slowing down, also scored on the play for
a rare two-RBI sacrifice bunt.
Bailey scored an unearned run in the 4th, then the Bruins salted
the game away with three in the 7th and another in the
8th. In the 7th, Thunell hit a sacrifice fly,
Bailey hit an RBI double, and Winterstein signled in his third run
of the game. Kuenzi scored on a wild pitch in
the 8th.
Wlodarczyk picked up his third RBI of the game with a double in
the 7th and scored the Pios' final run in the 9th on a double
by Roland Greene. The Pios actually out-hit the
Bruins 14-13, with Condon gathering three hits and Wlodarczyk, A.J.
Brown, and Holman two apiece.
Winterstein led the Bruins at the plate with a 4-for-5 game and
three RBIs, finishing 7-for-10 in the twinbill.
Bailey had three hits and Wyckoff two. Kuenzi
drew four walks, scored four times, and tied the Bruin record for
steals in a game with four. The Bruins had eight
stolen bases collectively in the game.
The teams will conclude their four-game series with a pair of
seven-inning contests Sunday at 12:00 noon.
