SALEM, Ore. –
Courtney Banks notched the George Fox University Bruins' only
win at No. 3 singles as the Willamette University Bearcats handed
the visitors an 8-1 setback in a Northwest Conference women's
tennis match Sunday afternoon here at the Courthouse Tennis Club.
The Bearcats built up an early lead by taking all three doubles
points. The No. 1 doubles was a thriller as
Shannon Palmer and Abby Funabiki nipped the Bruins' Mollee
Robinson and Corinne Borrelli 9-8 (11-9). Fabi
Dieguez and Annika Moffett took the No. 2 doubles 8-4 over Banks
and Betsy Ann Penman, and Alyssa Morrison and Jamie Slonaker downed
Shanna Lesire and Liliya Abildayev 8-3 at No. 3.
Banks defeated Dieguez 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to pick up the
Bruins' only point of the match. In the
other singles, it was Palmer over Robinson 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1;
Morrison over Borrelli 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2; Funabiki over Lesire 6-2,
6-0 at No. 4; Slonaker over Penman 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5; and Kristen
Dedijer over Abildayev 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6.
George Fox (2-7, NWC 2-6) travels to Whitman College Tuesday for a
rare mid-week match at 2:00 p.m. Willamette
(4-6, NWC 3-5) hosts Whitworth University Friday at the Courthouse
at 7:00 p.m.
