BEAVERTON, Ore.
– Despite having to cut two matches short due to time
constraints, the George Fox University Bruins were able to pull out
enough wins for a 5-2 victory over the visiting University of Puget
Sound Loggers in a Northwest Conference women's tennis match
that was moved here to the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center Friday due
to anticipated wet courts on the GFU campus.
The Bruins took two of the three doubles matches to open
play. The Loggers got the No. 1 doubles win as
Sam Taylor and Madison Holtz defeated Mollee Robinson and Corinne
Borrelli 8-4, but the Bruins bounced back with Betsy Ann Penman and
Courtney Banks teaming up for an 8-6 win over Ada Yu and Alissa
Wolf at No. 2, and Shanna Lesire and Liliya Abildayev taking Devin
Fields and Jessica Gauger 9-8 (7-5) at No. 3.
Taylor topped Robinson 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, but the Bruins
took the other three singles matches that were
completed. Borrelli edged Wolf in a 3-6, 7-6
(9-7), 7-6 (7-5) thriller at No. 2, Banks beat Holtz 6-3, 6-4 at
No. 3, and Lesire downed Yu 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4.
Penman led Fields 7-6, 1-2 at No. 5 and Abildayev was ahead of
Gauger 3-2 at No. 6 when play was halted because only one court was
going to be available to the teams at that particular time at the
public facility.
