THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Losing only one set all
day, the George Fox University Bruins completed the Cal-Lu-fornia
Invitational Women's Volleyball Tournament as one of two unbeaten
teams in the 14-team tournament by defeating the Dominican
University Stars from Illinois 3-0 and the Pomona-Pitzer Colleges
Sagehens 3-1 Saturday afternoon here at California Lutheran
University's Gilbert Arena.
With a 25-13, 25-16, 27-25 win over Dominican and a 25-14,
22-25, 25-13, 25-16 victory over Pomona-Pitzer, George Fox joined
host Cal Lutheran as the tourney's perfect teams. The Bruins
also improved their season record to 5-1 and stretched their
winning streak to five.
In the first set of the Dominican match, the Bruins jumped out
to early leads of 7-1 and 10-2 and cruised to victory by hitting
.323 in the set. The Bruins closed out the second set with an
8-3 run, Sarah Crossfield scoring four kills in the Bruins' final
six points.
Set three was a tight one throughout, featuring 16 ties.
Facing set points at 21-24, the Bruins scored three straight to
knot it at 24-24, only to drop the next point to again face set
points. A kill by Lyndsay Hovee, a block by Hovee and Kaitlyn
Maddams, and another Hovee kill rescued the se for the Bruins,
however.
Hovee finished with 12 kills, Jennifer Panico and Eliza Pledger
had seven each, and Crossfield added six while hitting .417.
Ali Toedtemeier passed out 20 assists and Lani Rasmussen 11.
On defense, Hovee had 16 digs, Panico 13, and Toedtemeier 12.
The Bruins also made nine blocks, Pledger with two solo blocks and
five assisted.
Down 10-9 in the first set of the Pomona match, the Bruins
exploded for a 16-4 run to win going away. The Bruins had six
kills and three blocks in their final 11 points, and hit .341 in
the set with 15 kills and only one error. The Sagehens evened
the match when the Bruins hit only .074 in the second set.
Pomona jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the third set, but George Fox
tied it with a 5-1 run of their own. With the score at 9-9,
Maddams served the next eight winning points as the Bruins took
control with a 17-9 lead and went on to take a 2-1 lead in the
match. In the fourth set, the Bruins dropped the first point
before winning the next five and gradually pulling away to capture
the match.
Hovee sparked the Bruins with 11 kills and 29 digs, while
Pledger, Maddams, and Stephanie Kerr had eight kills apiece.
Toedtemeier had 24 assist and Rasmussen 16. Jenna Dohren
chipped in with 22 digs on defense while Panico added 17, Carley
Johnson 11 in only one set, and Rasmussen 10. The Bruins had
eight blocks, with Pledger, Maddams, and Kerr in on four each.
Statistics for Dominican and Pomona-Pitzer were unavailable at
this time.
George Fox returns home to open Northwest Conference play
Wednesday against Lewis & Clark College at 7:00 p.m.
