Box Score
WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Rallying from an early
score by the visiting George Fox University Bruins, the Whitman
College Missionaries scored three unanswered goals and then hung on
for a 3-2 win in the Northwest Conference men's soccer opener for
both teams Saturday afternoon here at the Whitman Athletic Fields.
With Brennan Altringer providing an assist, Zach Sanders gave
George Fox an early 1-0 lead with a scoring strike, his fourth of
the season, from the top of the box at the 18:03 mark of the first
half. Whitman pulled even in the 33rd minute when Sam
Freedman collected his first goal with an assist from Leland
Matthaeus.
The Missionaries inched in front five minutes into the second
half when Freedman crashed the left side of the box. George Fox
keeper Jake Maguire beat Freedman to the ball and knocked it away,
but Freedman collected the rebound a few moments later and chipped
the ball to the right post for Chris Reid, who headed it home for
an easy score. It was his second goal of the year.
Whitman scored what would prove to be the game-winner at 59:42
when Brian Percival notched his first goal unassisted with a
20-yard scoring strike into the top left corner. That offset
a George Fox goal three minutes from the end by Altringer, who
chipped in his third score of the season from 10 yards away after a
pass from Kyle Story.
Whitman outshot the Bruins 22-9, which included a 13-4 edge in
shots on goal. Maguire made eight saves for George Fox while his
Missionary counterpart, Nic McDonald, made two quality saves.
George Fox (3-3, NWC 0-1) plays Sunday afternoon at Whitworth
University at 2:30 p.m. Whitman (2-2-1) hosts Pacific
University Sunday, also at 2:30 p.m.
