Box Score
NEWBERG, Ore. - Reserve forward Kurtis Wong of
Linfield College came off the bench to score his first two goals of
the season, both in the second half, as the visiting Wildcats
fought off the George Fox University Bruins 3-1 in a Northwest
Conference men's soccer match Sunday afternoon here at Morse Field.
Linfield took a 1-0 first-half lead when Nick Powers scored his
first goal of the year, heading in a corner kick from Travis Isaacs
at the 29:37 mark. The Wildcats thoroughly controlled the
first half as they earned seven corner kicks to one for the Bruins
while the Linfield defense limited the home team to one shot the
entire period.
The Bruins came out with a more aggressive offense in the second
half and took 10 shots, but were unable to dent the scoreboard
until after the Wildcats had scored again at the 66:29 mark, Wong
drilling home a penalty kick after a George Fox foul in the
keeper's box. Twin brothers Brian and Kyle Story teamed up
for the Bruins' goal at 71:43, Brian sending a corner kick into the
middle where Kyle knocked in a loose ball after a brief scrum in
front of the net. Kyle's second score of the season narrowed
the gap to 2-1.
Wong added an insurance goal at 82:01 when he sent a five-yarder
from left of the goal just inside the near post after a well-placed
cross from Isaacs along the right baseline. The Bruins had
one more shot to cut into the deficit with three-and-a-half minutes
left, but Brennan Altringer's bullet from the right side of the
keeper's box slammed into the near post and angled out of bounds,
and the Wildcats ran out the clock.
Linfield finished with 15 shots to 11 for George Fox, a 10-7
advantage in shots on goal, and a 10-5 margin on corner
kicks. Jake Maguire made seven saves in goal for the Bruins,
while Cody Tipton made six stops for the Wildcats.
Both teams play again Saturday, George Fox (3-6, NWC 0-4)
hosting Pacific Lutheran University and Linfield (3-5-1, NWC 2-2)
visiting Whitworth University in conference matchups.
