NEWBERG, Ore. - Finding a new position very
much to his liking, junior forward Sean Daughtry scored the first
two goals of the game and sparked the George Fox University Bruins
to a 4-0 win over the Northwest Christian University Beacons in
their home opener Monday afternoon here at Morse Field.
A defender for most of his first two college seasons, Daughtry
was inserted into an offensive position against the Beacons as
George Fox coach Tim Tsohantaridis rearranged his starting lineup
following two scoreless games to open the season in
California. The move paid immediate dividends as Daughtry
nailed a header from near the far post to the left side of the net
after a corner kick from the left by Kyle Story 12 minutes into the
game. He added his second score eight minutes later with a
straight-in shot from eight yards out after a short cross from the
left by Zach Sanders.
The Bruins carried that 2-0 margin into the half after
thoroughly controlling the opening stanza. George Fox took 20
first-half shots to three for Northwest Christian.
The second half was more even as the Bruins took nine shots to
four for the Beacons. Sanders scored at 82:03 on a penalty
kick and Wade Knowles added the Bruins' final goal at 84:17 with a
10-yarder from the left of the keeper's box to the far corner
following a through ball from David Rickey.
Freshman Elliott Davis, the third Bruin to start in goal this
season, earned the win and the shutout by making four saves.
Beacons keeper Nick Kratzke suffered the setback while making 14
saves on the day. The Bruins finished with a 29-7 advantage
in shots (20-4 in shots on goal) and a 7-1 edge in corners.
George Fox (1-2) is back in action Sunday, hosting Walla Walla
University at 4:00 p.m. Northwest Christian (0-3) visits
Walla Walla Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
