PORTLAND, Ore. - Taking
advantage of the extended fall women's tennis season, the
George Fox University Bruins edged the Lewis & Clark College
Pioneers 5-4 in a match between Northwest Conference foes that will
not count on their conference records Friday afternoon here at the
L&C Tennis Dome.
George Fox and Lewis & Clark will play each other twice in
the spring, and those matches will count for the conference
standings. The NWC has gone to a partial round-robin schedule
for this year, each team playing every other team once and four of
their eight opponents a second time, which left some additional
playing dates available, and the Bruins and Pios decided to use one
of them against each other in the fall.
The Bruins got off to a good start by taking two of the three
doubles matches. At No. 2 doubles, Alyssa Emoto and Shaina
Inn of George Fox defeated Whitney DeBree and Alix Dixon of Lewis
& Clark 8-5, and the Bruins' Cara
Griffith and Bethany Nguyen downed the Pios' Sara
Matijascic and Makena McCluskey 8-2 at No. 3. At No. 1, it
was L&C's Amalia Nilsson and Isabelle Borris over
GFU's Molly Beaumont and Mollee Robinson 8-0.
The teams split the singles, Lewis & Clark taking the top
three matches and George Fox the last three. At No. 1
singles, Nilsson knocked off Beaumont 6-0, 6-1; DeBree defeated
Emoto 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2; and Borris beat Robinson 6-2, 6-2 at
No.3. The Bruins got wins at No. 4 as Inn dropped McCluskey
6-3, 6-1, and at No. 5 as Griffith downed Matijascic 6-0,
6-1. Liliya Abildayeva picked up a win for the Bruins at No.
6 when the Pios' Dixon had to default due to an injury.
George Fox will enter spring play with a 1-0 record, while Lewis
& Clark will start the spring season with a 0-1 slate.
