FOREST GROVE, Ore. - Claiming
their first Northwest Conference men's soccer title since
1996, the Pacific University Boxers nailed down the league's
automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Tournament with a
4-0 win over the George Fox University Bruins Saturday afternoon
here at Lincoln Park Stadium.
Jasem Jaihouni scored a goal off a free kick in the sixth minute
to give Pacific an early 1-0 lead, which they took into
halftime. The Boxers added another goal early in the second
half when Sean Mills headed in a Patrick Murray pass in the 59th
minute. Six minutes later, Jaihouni chipped in another goal off an
Avery Neal assist. In the final minute of the match, Kody Ganiko
controlled the ball off a rebound of Jaihouni's free kick shot to
net the fourth Pacific goal.
Goalkeepers Andrew Stevermer and Chris Grasso combined for the
11th Pacific shutout of the season, with Stevermer making four
saves. Elliott Davis had seven saves in 80
minutes in goal for George Fox, and Jacob Guckenberger played the
final 10 minutes in the net but had no saves.
Pacific out-shot the Bruins 30-9 overall, 11-4 in shots on goal,
and had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Sawyer Meek got the
most chances for the Bruins with two shots, while Kizamu Tsutakawa
had five shots for the Boxers.
George Fox finishes its season with a 0-15-2 overall record and
0-13-1 in the conference for an eighth-place finish. Pacific
is now 14-2-3 overall and 10-2-2 in the conference. The
Boxers will now await the Monday morning announcement from the NCAA
to find out where they will be heading for their first and
second-round matches next weekend.
