ANTHEM, Ariz. - Scoring five times with two out
in the top of the 11th inning, the George Fox University Bruins
picked up their first win of the 2010 baseball season with a 7-2
victory over the Occidental College Tigers on the second day of
play in the Arizona Desert Classic Friday afternoon here at Boulder
Creek High School.
George Fox sophomore right-hander Jeremy Cheney started and
threw seven strong innings, allowing one run on only three hits
with three strikeouts and one walk, but got a no-decision.
After a scoreless 8th by Travis Schroeder, Bruin relief ace Chad
Jones took over for the 9th with a 2-1 lead.
Jones (1-0), who led the team in both wins (8) and saves (7) in
2009, the latter a new Bruin single-season record, surrendered the
game-tying run on a squeeze bunt on a 2-2 count, but shut out the
Tigers over the next two innings on no hits with three strikeouts
to pick up the win.
Colton Thomas, who had his second three-hit game, was on first
with a single and two outs when the Bruins exploded in the top of
the 11th. Derek Aldrich was hit by a pitch and Perry Knudson
walked before Sam Stahl singled in Thomas to break the
deadlock. Dan Winterstein followed with a
two-run single, and Seth Anderson delivered another run with a base
hit. When Anderson' safety was muffed in the outfield,
Winterstein was able to score all the way from first.
George Fox banged out 12 hits in the game, Stahl joining Thomas
in the three-hit column and Anderson collecting two. The
Bruins evened their record at 1-1 while the Tigers fell to 2-3
overall and 0-2 in the Classic.
