SALEM, Ore. - Freshman Molly
Beaumont won her college debut at No. 1 singles for the George Fox
University Bruins, but the Bruins came up short in the number of
players they had and in the score, falling in their season opener
8-1 to the Willamette University Bearcats in Northwest Conference
women's tennis Saturday here at the Courthouse Tennis Club.
Beaumont edged the Bearcats' Shannon Palmer 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) for
the Bruins' lone victory. The Bearcats won four singles and
two doubles matches, but the Bruins defaulted the No. 6 singles and
No. 3 doubles because they have only five players on the roster at
this time and could not fill those positions for the match.
In No. 1 doubles, Palmer and Kate Thurber edged Beaumont and
Mollee Robinson 8-6, and Alyssa Morrison and Fabi Dieguez downed
the Bruins' Cara Griffith and Liliya Abidayeva 8-4
at No. 2.
Singles winners for Willamette were Morrison over Robinson 6-3,
6-3 at No. 2; Dieguez over Allie Michelotti 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3;
Jamie Slonaker over Griffith 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 at No. 4; and Brooke
Sessums over Abildayeva 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 5.
