PORTLAND, Ore. - In an unusual
doubleheader against two different opponents, the George Fox
University Bruins fell to the Concordia University-Portland
Cavaliers 10-9 before dropping an 11-7 decision to the University
of Portland Pilots in non-conference baseball action Saturday
afternoon here at UP's Joe Etzel Field.
In the opener against the Cavaliers of the NAIA Division II, a
six-run outburst against George Fox ace Mark Putney (0-2) in the
bottom of the 4th inning broke open a 1-1 game and propelled the
Cavs to victory. The Bruins scored eight runs over the final
four innings, but it was not enough to overcome Concordia's early
outburst and another three-spot in the 7th that gave them just
enough breathing room to hold on.
Concordia got a run in the 1st as Andrew Reid doubled in Calvin
Nagy, but George Fox tied it in the 3rd when Seth
Anderson singled in Perry Knudson. The Cavs exploded
in the 4th by scoring all six of their runs with two outs, Mike
Dickman singling in two runs to break the 1-1 deadlock and Sean
Myrom capping the rally with a two-run homer to left, his second of
the season.
Nate Hickok and Sam Stahl had RBI singles in the Bruin 6th and
Josh Burch doubled in two in a three-run 7th to bring the Bruins
within one at 7-6, but the Cavs put the game away with three in the
last of the 7th, all unearned and all with two out. Dan
Winterstein singled in a run and later scored on a balk in the 8th
and Stahl singled home another in the 9th for the Bruins, but the
tying run was left at second as Brett Ferguson got Anderson to
ground out for his first save.
Jarrod Castrejon (1-0) started and went 5.2 innings for the
Concordia win, striking out four and walking two. Putney was
touched for eight hits and seven runs while fanning four and
walking one in taking the loss for the Bruins.
Stahl had four of the Bruins' 11 hits while Winterstein and
Burch had two apiece. Reid collected four hits, Myrom three,
and Nagy two for the Cavs, who had 12 safeties in all.
In the second game, the Bruins jumped on top in the 1st as Burch
scored on a grounder to second by Josh Rapacz that was booted for
an error, but the NCAA Division I Pilots answered with three in the
home half against George Fox starter Jeremy Cheney (0-1).
Riley Henricks singled in Kris Kauppila with the tying run and Kyle
Haskin delivered a two-run double that gave the Pilots the lead for
good.
The Bruins got one run back in the 2nd as Nate Hickok singled in
Derek Aldrich, and the score stayed 3-2 until the last of the 6th
when the Pilots exploded for five runs. Kauppila had a key
two-run single in the inning, and Henricks sealed the frame with an
RBI triple. Craig Smith's three-run triple in the 7th closed
out the Portland scoring.
Anderson doubled in a run and Michael Woo and Winterstein had
RBI singles for George Fox in the 8th. The Bruins got their
final two runs in the 9th on a fielder's choice error and a balk.
Kyle Kraus (1-0) went 7.1 innings, scattering nine hits and
allowing five runs with two strikeouts to get the Portland
win. Cheney surrendered 13 hits and eight runs with five K's
and two walks in 5.2 innings while sustaining the setback.
Stahl and Anderson banged out three hits apiece and Rapacz had
two for the Bruins, who totaled 12 hits in the game. Portland
struck for 17 hits, Kauppila going 4-for-4, while Tyler Thompson
had three hits and Smith, Henricks, Haskin and Brian Fratalli had
two each. Smith drove in four runs.
George Fox (2-4) and Concordia (2-4) square off again Sunday at
11:00 a.m. at Etzel Field. Portland (2-0) then plays
Concordia at 2:00 p.m.
