PORTLAND, Ore. - Juco transfer
Sam Stahl went 3-for-5 to raise his batting average to .563, and
rookie right-hander Clay Gartner picked up his first college win as
the George Fox University Bruins rallied past the Concordia
University-Portland Cavaliers 6-4 in a non-conference baseball game
Sunday here at the University of Portland's Joe Etzel Field.
Concordia took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st off Gartner
(1-0) when Mike Dickman doubled and scored on Andrew Reid's one-out
single. The Cavaliers made it 4-0 in the 4th on a three-run
home run by Tim Reavis, his first of the year, but Gartner pitched
three shutout innings after that, giving his teammates time to come
back.
The Bruins got going against the Cavs' Griffin Waller (0-1) in
the bottom of the 4th, scoring three times after two were
out. Eric Gantenbein singled to left, moved up on a wild
pitch, and scored on Nate Hickok's single to
center. After a walk to Josh Burch, Stahl delivered them both
with a double to left-center.
Gantenbein tied the game when he drew a bases-loaded walk in the
5th, and after Zac Manor relieved Waller, Hickok was hit by a pitch
to force across the go-ahead run. Stahl scored the Bruins'
insurance run in the 8th when he singled to left, moved up on two
ground outs, and scored on Brent Trask's pinch-single through the
left side.
Gartner left after seven innings, having allowed seven hits and
four runs with six strikeouts and no walks, in favor of Chad
Jones. The Bruins' righty closer proceeded to retire all six
Cavaliers he faced, fanning three, to pick up his second save of
the season and ninth of his career, one away from Nick Hedgecock's
all-time record of 10.
George Fox (3-4) next plays its home opener Tuesday at 2:00
p.m., a single game against Corban College, before hosting Menlo
College for three games on the weekend. Concordia (2-5) was
to play the University of Portland later Sunday afternoon.
