TACOMA, Wash. - Taking
advantage of the George Fox University Bruins' limited roster, the
University of Puget Sound Loggers snapped a string of 18 Northwest
Conference losses in a row and picked up their first win of the
season with a 6-3 victory in women's tennis Friday afternoon here
at the UPS Tennis Pavilion.
Because of just five players on their roster, George Fox
forfeited the number three doubles and the number six singles
matches, giving Puget Sound an early 2-0 lead.
In doubles play, the Bruins' No. 1 team of Mollee Robinson and
Molly Beaumont won a tight match over the Loggers'
Samantha Taylor and Madison Holtz 9-8. Puget Sound took the
No. 2 doubles as Ada Yu and Maddie Thiesse earned an 8-5 win over
Liliya Abildayeva and Cara Griffith.
In singles play, Robinson and Beaumont picked up wins at No. 1
and No. 2 respectively to even the match at 3-3. Robinson
dispatched Taylor 6-4, 6-0, and Beaumont downed Holtz 6-3,
6-3. The Loggers secured the match with victories at Nos.
3-5, with Thiesse topping Allie Michelotti 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3, Yu
beating Griffith 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4, and Devin Fields defeating
Abildayeva 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5.
It was the first conference win for the Loggers since Feb. 22,
2009, and improved their record to 1-5 overall and in the
NWC. The Bruins dropped to 0-3 overall and 0-2 against the
league.
George Fox visits Pacific Lutheran University Saturday for a
12:00 noon match, while Puget Sound hosts Lewis & Clark College
at 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
