Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. - Hitting the century mark in
points for the first time in four seasons, the George Fox
University Bruins gave head coach Mark Sundquist
his 100th career win with a 103-90 victory over the Whitman College
Missionaries in a Northwest Conference men's basketball shootout
Friday night here at the Wheeler Sports Center's Miller Gym.
Sundquist, whose record in 10 seasons is now 100-144 but is
73-72 over the last six, broke a tie with Lorin Miller (99-72 from
1970-76) for second place in wins among George Fox coaches.
The all-time leader is GFU Sports Hall of Fame coach Mark Vernon
(318-218 from 1982-2000).
The game opened at a dizzying pace. Atwater hit a jumper
to open the game and Jordan Brandon answered with a three-pointer,
but that 3-2 lead was the only one the Missionaries would
have. Stephen Wiseley hit a layup to break the only deadlock
of the game, 5-5, at the 18:29 mark, and the Bruins never
relinquished the lead, extending the advantage to 19-10 only four
minutes into the contest. Atwater and Wiseley had seven
points in that span.
Both teams maintained their furious assault on the nets for the
next seven minutes, Whitman trimming the deficit to four at 35-31
on jumper by Daniel Davidson with 8:52 left. The teams
finally went scoreless for over two-and-a-half minutes before a
LuQuam Thompson trey brought the Missionaries within one at 35-34
with 6:19 remaining. The Bruins took off on an 11-1 run over
the next four minutes, however, Alex Stockner's steal and slam dunk
making it 46-35 with 2:45 left. An 8-1 spurt by the
Missionaries brought the visitors back within four at the break,
47-43.
Justin Artis opened the second half with a jumper as Whitman
closed within two, but the Bruins ripped off the next eight points,
the last five by Stockner, and the Missionaries got no closer than
seven the rest of the way. The Bruins built 14-point leads
three times, the last at 78-64 on a Cole Whitehurst layup with 7:55
left, and hit the 100-point mark on a Wiseley free throw with a
minute to go. It was the first 100-point game for the Bruins
since a 108-100 loss at Corban College on Nov. 22, 2005.
George Fox shot over .500 from the field in both halves and
Whitman did in the second half, the Bruins finishing at .571
(32-56) and the Missionaries at .500 (32-64). George Fox hit
7-19 from three-point range and Whitman 10-26, but the big
difference came at the free throw line - the Bruins shot 32-41
(.780) to 16-25 (.640) for the Missionaries, who resorted to
fouling late in the game in a futile effort to catch up. The
Bruins also cut their turnovers in half from their previous game at
Whitman, making only 16 as opposed to the 33 they had in a 90-85
loss there on Jan. 8.
Wiseley led all scorers with 26 points for the Bruins, hitting
10-12 from the line, and Stockner added 25, sinking 8-9 from the
field and 8-8 from the stripe. Atwater added 13 points, and
Rich Smith notched his fourth double-double with 12 points and 11
boards. Wiseley and Atwater contributed five assists each,
and Stockner and Whitehurst had three steals apiece.
Peter Clark led a quintet of Missionaries in double figures with
17 points, 15 of them on 5-10 shooting from three-point
range. Davidson and David Michaels scored 14 points each,
Thompson had 11, and leading scorer Brandon Shaw had only 10, six
below his average, as he struggled to a 3-13 shooting night from
the floor. Shaw did hand out seven assists, though.
Artis, Michaels, and Max Adcox had four rebounds each, and Michaels
made three steals.
