BEAVERTON, Ore. –
Keeping themselves in contention for one of the top spots in the
Northwest Conference race while keeping George Fox University
winless, the Willamette University Bearcats cruised to an 8-1 win
over the Bruins in women's tennis Friday afternoon here at
the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.
The match was moved from the GFU campus courts to the indoor
courts at Tualatin Hills on Wednesday due to expected steady rain
on Friday, and the clouds did not disappoint, making the move of
the tennis match a good one.
The Bruins picked up their win at No. 1 doubles. After the
Bruins' Molly Beaumont and Mollee Robinson battled the
Bearcats' Fabi Dieguez and Alyssa Morrison to an 8-8
deadlock, the George Fox duo reeled off seven straight points in
the tiebreaker for a hard-fought 9-8 victory.
Willamette took the rest of the matches, all in straight
sets. At No. 2 doubles, Katie Huber and Jamie Slonaker downed
Cara Griffith and Liliya Abildayeva 8-2, and the No. 3 doubles went
to the Bearcats by default.
In singles, it was Natalia Agarycheva over Beaumont 6-2, 6-0 at
No. 1; Huber over Robinson 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2; Morrison over Allie
Michelotti 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3; Dieguez over Griffith 6-3, 6-3 at No.
4; and Slonaker over Abildayeva 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5. The No. 6
singles went to Willamette by default.
