PORTLAND, Ore. – In an
unusual home-and-away morning-and-afternoon doubleheader that was
actually played at the same place, the Lewis & Clark College
Pioneers took two Northwest Conference women's tennis matches
from the George Fox University Bruins by identical 7-2 scores
Saturday here at the Lewis & Clark Tennis Dome.
The first match of the day was scheduled as George Fox's
home match, but wet conditions on the courts in Newberg made them
unplayable, so the contest was moved to Portland. The second
match was already scheduled as Lewis & Clark's home
match.
In the first match, the Bruins picked up one doubles win and one
in singles. Molly Beaumont and Mollee
Robinson defeat the Pioneers' Whitney DeBree and Maggie Peach
8-2 at No. 1 doubles, while Beaumont was a winner over Jill Coleman
6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. The rest of the matches went to
the Pioneers.
In doubles, Lewis & Clark got a win from Coleman and Macrina
Sharpe over Cara Griffith and Allie Michelotti 9-7, and a default
victory at No. 3. In singles, it was Lisa Harunaga over
Robinson 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1; Peach over Griffith 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3;
Paige Earhart over Michelotti 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4; Alix Dixon over
Liliya Abildayeva 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5; and the No. 6 match was
defaulted by the Bruins to the Pios.
In the afternoon competition, the Bruins' two victories
came at the top two singles positions. Beaumont topped
Harunaga 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1, and Robinson breezed past DeBree 6-2,
6-1 at No. 2. The Pioneers took the rest of the singles as
Isabelle Borris defeated Griffith 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) at No. 3; Sharpe
prevailed in a third-set tiebreaker over Michelotti 4-6, 7-6, 1-0
(10-5) at No. 4; Lindsay Burnette also went three with Abildayeva
and won 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) at No. 5; and Caitlyn Homer blanked
the Bruins' newest addition to the roster, Shawna Buck, 6-0,
6-0 at No. 6.
All three doubles went to the Pios as DeBree and Borris downed
Beaumont and Robinson 8-3 at No. 1, Sharpe and Earhart edged
Griffith and Abildayeva 8-6 at No. 2, and Dixon and Marie
Steinrucke knocked off Michelotti and Buck 8-2 at No. 3.
George Fox (0-10, NWC 0-9) will be off for almost two weeks,
returning to the courts on Friday, Mar. 26, with a match at
Whitworth University at 3:00 p.m. Lewis & Clark (7-4, NWC
7-3) goes to Linfield College Sunday for a 3:00 p.m. match.
