WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Playing both of
their Northwest Conference women's tennis matches against
Whitman College twice in one day, the George Fox University Bruins
dropped both to the Missionaries, the first 9-0 and the second 8-1,
in a Saturday morning-afternoon doubleheader here at the Whitman
outdoor courts.
Whitman took the morning match all in straight sets. In
doubles, Hadley DeBree and Divneet Kaur defeated the Bruins'
Molly Beaumont and Mollee Robinson 8-5 at No. 1, and Elise Otto and
Kate Kunkel downed Cara Griffith and Liliya
Abildayeva 8-4 at No. 2. The Bruins, with only five
available players, defaulted the No. 3 doubles.
In singles, it was Alyssa Roberg over Robinson 6-1, 6-2 at No.
1; Otto over Beaumont 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2; Kaur over Griffith 6-1,
6-0 at No. 3; Kunkel over Abildayeva 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4; and Dena
Wessel over Shawna Buck 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5. The Bruins
defaulted the No. 6 singles.
The Bruins avoided a shutout in the afternoon match when
Abildayeva knocked off Wessel 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 singles, and
several other matches were closer than earlier in the day.
In doubles, Otto and Roberg topped Beaumont and Robinson 8-2 at
No. 1, and Emily Rolston and Kunkel blanked Griffith and Abildayeva
8-0 at No. 2. The Bruins defaulted at No. 3.
Whitman's singles wins came from DeBree over Beaumont 3-6,
6-3, 1-0 (10-4) at No. 1; Kaur over Robinson 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2;
Rolston over Griffith 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3; and Charlotte Scott over
Buck 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. The No. 6 singles was defaulted to
the Missionaries.
George Fox (0-13, NWC 0-12) returns home next weekend to host
Pacific Lutheran University Friday at 3:00 p.m. and the University
of Puget Sound Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Whitman (11-6, NWC 9-2)
hosts Whitworth University Sunday at 1:00 p.m. All are
conference matches.
