NEWBERG, Ore. - No. 5 singles player Liliya
Abildayeva picked up her first win of the season, but that was the
lone bright spot for the George Fox University Bruins as they
dropped a Northwest Conference women's tennis match 8-1 to the
visiting Pacific University Boxers Friday afternoon here at the GFU
campus courts.
Pacific began by cruising through the doubles matches, with Cat
Goya and Megan Yoshimoto dispatching the Bruins' Molly Beaumont and
Mollee Robinson 8-3 at No. 1, and Dayna Wong and Rachel Mizuno
disposing of Cara Griffith and Allie Michelotti by the same 8-3
count at No. 2. George Fox defaulted the No. 3 doubles
because of only five players.
In singles, Goya defeated Beaumont 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1; Yoshimoto
won a tight first set and then a big second set 7-6 (7-2), 6-0 over
Robinson at No. 2; Wong downed Michelotti 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3; and
Mizuno topped Griffith 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4. Abildayeva stood up
for the Bruins at No. 5 with a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-4, 1-0
(10-7) win over Stephanie Velligas. The Bruins defaulted the
No. 6 singles.
Georg Fox (0-6, NWC 0-5) plays the middle match of five straight
home conference matches Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against Whitworth
University. Pacific (3-6, NWC 3-5) hosts the University of
Puget Sound in an NWC match Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
