NEWBERG, Ore. - Keeping their unblemished
Northwest Conference record spotless, the league-leading Whitworth
University Pirates posted straight-set sweeps of all seven matches
that were played in defeating the George Fox University Bruins 7-0
in women's tennis Saturday afternoon here at the GFU campus courts.
Only seven matches were scored because no players were listed
for either team in the No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles slots.
George Fox has usually surrendered those matches by default due to
having only five players on its current roster.
Whitworth opened up with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles as Rachel
Burns and Alli Marshall topped the Bruins' Molly
Beaumont and Mollee Robinson. In the No. 2 doubles,
Stephanie Reardon and Katie Staudinger outscored Cara Griffith and
Liliya Abildayeva 8-5.
In singles, Burns downed Beaumont 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1; Marshall
topped Robinson 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2; Janell Talbot shut out Allie
Michelotti 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3; Siri Carlson defeated Griffith 6-3,
6-2 at No. 4; and Claire Hemming beat Abildayeva 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5.
George Fox (0-7, NWC 0-6) returns to action Friday, hosting
Willamette University in the fourth of a five-match home stretch at
3:00 p.m. Whitworth (7-2, NWC 7-0) is off until Saturday,
traveling to Tacoma, Wash., to play the University of Puget Sound
at 10:00 a.m. and Pacific Lutheran University at 3:00 p.m.
