FOREST GROVE, Ore. –
With one last chance to pick up a victory during the 2010 season,
the George Fox University Bruins gave it a gallant try but came up
short again in their season finale, a 7-2 loss to the Pacific
University Boxers, in a Northwest Conference women's tennis
match Sunday afternoon here at the Holce Tennis Courts.
The Bruins' top combo of Molly Beaumont and Mollee Robinson
earned a hard-fought victory over the Boxers' Cat Goya and
Megan Yoshimoto, taking home an 8-6 victory at No. 1, but the home
team took the other two doubles. Dayna Wong and Rachel Mizuno
scored an 8-3 win over Cara Griffith and Allie
Michelotti at No. 2, while Stephanie Velligas and Laura
Swenson collected an 8-2 victory over Liliya Abildayeva and Shawna
Buck at No. 3.
The Bruins picked up their lone singles win as Michelotti won at
No. 5 by taking a third set tiebreaker from Velligas 6-4, 2-6, 1-0
(10-6), but the rest of the match belong to the Boxers. Goya
went straight sets to edge Beaumont 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1, while
Yoshimoto went three sets to beat Robinson 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Wong outlasted Griffith at No. 3 by a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) score,
Mizuno did the same to Abildayeva 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 at No. 4, and Dawn
Greene closed out the day with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Buck at No. 6.
George Fox finished the campaign with an 0-17 overall record and
an 0-16 mark in the conference, landing in ninth place.
Pacific (6-12, NWC 6-10) came in sixth to earn its second
consecutive trip to the NWC Tournament on Apr. 16-17 in Yakima,
Wash., where the Boxers will open play again No. 3 seed Whitman
College on Friday morning.
