NEWBERG, Ore. - Before a near-capacity crowd of
some 650 spectators, the visiting Oregon Institute of Technology
spoiled the first-ever match at George Fox University's new Austin
Sports Complex soccer field with a 3-0 blanking of the Bruins in
non-conference men's soccer action here Thursday afternoon.
The Owls scored the first goal ever at the new facility 19
minutes into the contest when Sam Holcomb send a long cross from
the right to the middle near the 18-yard line. The ball
glanced of a Bruin defender to Ashton Betts, who sent a shot into
the far corner for his first goal of the season.
Oregon Tech added a second goal later in the period when Oscar
Alonso-Ayala's corner kick to the middle of the box was flicked by
Betts to Rey Chavolla, who headed it home in the 38th minute.
Betts closed out the scoring in the 75th minute in the second half
when he put back his own shot after Bruin keeper Elliott Davis had rejected
but not controlled his first attempt from about eight yards out in
the center of the box.
Tech out-shot Fox 24-10 overall and 12-5 in shots on goal, with
Betts taking seven of the Owls' attempts. David Smouse and Derek Buttrick had two
tries apiece for the Bruins. OIT had eight corners to three
for the home team.
Davis made nine saves in goal for George Fox. Lee Tanner
had fours saves in 77 minutes and Loren Jessen one in 13 minute for
Oregon Tech.
Dedication ceremonies for the facility were held following the
game and before the George Fox women's night game against Northwest
University. The complex is named for local philanthropists
Ken and Joan Austin, who donated the land on which the field sits
to the university for the purpose of Bruin sports development.
George Fox (0-1) visits Trinity Lutheran College in Everett,
Wash., a first-year program, Saturday for a 4:00 p.m.
contest. Oregon Tech (1-2) is off until Sept. 11, when the
Owls will host Menlo College at 11:00 a.m.
