Box Score PARKLAND, Wash. - Two goals and an assist by
Spencer Augustin sparked the Pacific Lutheran University Lutes, who
remained co-leaders in the Northwest Conference men's soccer
race, past the visiting George Fox University Bruins in a
high-scoring affair Saturday afternoon here at the PLU soccer
field.
Augustin, who has scored four goals in the last three matches to
take over the team lead with eight, provided the first and last
goals of the match and kept the Lutes deadlocked with Whitworth
University and the University of Puget Sound atop the conference
standings. PLU is 7-2 overall and 4-1 in the NWC, while
George Fox is now 2-6-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the league.
Augustin opened the scoring at the 16:42 mark, knocking home a
cross from Surafel Wodajo, who also assisted on the next goal with
a corner kick that was headed into the net by Greg Noll at
37:09. Wodajo has nine assists on the season and 30 in his
career, tied with Jay Pettit (2002-05) for the PLU career lead in
that category.
Richard Renteria netted his first goal at 43:20, with an assist
going to Derek Johnson, to make it 3-0 at the half. Early in
the second half, the Lutes made it 4-0 on Brendan Cohen's
first goal, with Augustin getting the assist.
George Fox finally got its offense going and scored consecutive
goals to cut the deficit in two. The first came at 54:56 off
a free kick by Myles Sorokovsky that sailed
untouched into the goal, his second score of the season. At
76:20, Brennan Altringer put a corner kick into the box, where Luke
Dickens sent a shot toward the goal that was blocked by PLU keeper
Joe Rayburn but not controlled. Sawyer Meek knocked in the
rebound for his second goal of the year.
Augustin closed the scoring at 82:55, following up his own shot
that was deflected by Bruin goalie Elliott Davis.
George Fox had a 23-17 advantage in shots and put 13 of those on
frame, forcing 11 saves by Rayburn. The Lutes had 17 total
shots and eight on goal, finishing five of them, leaving three
saves to be made by Davis.
