Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. – After breaking a
scoreless tie with a goal just before halftime, the visiting
University of Puget Sound Loggers went to tack on two more
second-half goals and sail past the George Fox University Bruins
3-0 in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match that was
played in a steady drizzle Friday night here at the Austin Sports
Complex.
The teams battled on even terms throughout most of the first
half, though the Loggers did have decidedly-more corner kick
opportunities (7-1) but failed to cash in on any of them. UPS
finally broke through with 1:28 left before the half when Matthew
Durland sent a long through ball ahead to Vincent McCluskey, who
ran into a roadblock of Bruin defender Steven Haga
and goalkeeper Elliott Davis, who had moved up to challenge the
play. The three players all collided at the ball, Davis went
down, Haga was injured on the play and had to leave the game, and
McCluskey came through standing for an easy shot into an undefended
net, his fifth score of the season.
The Loggers added their first insurance goal at 55:52 of the
second half when a foul was called on the Bruins in the penalty box
and Colin McIntosh converted the ensuing penalty kick into the left
corner of the net for his second score of the year. The
visitors got their third goal at 86:06 when Andrew White crossed
from the left to Marcus Rudd in the middle of the box, and he
drilled home his first goal of the season from 10 yards away just
under the crossbar.
Puget Sound ended with a 12-7 advantage in shots, 6-2 in shots
on goal, and 8-1 in corners. Chris McDonald earned the
shutout for the Loggers with a pair of saves, while Davis had three
stops in the net for the Bruins.
