Box Score FOREST GROVE, Ore. –
Scoring the only goal of the game within the first six minutes, the
Pacific University Boxers handed the visiting George Fox University
Bruins a narrow 1-0 defeat as the 2011 Northwest Conference
men's soccer season came to a conclusion for both teams
Saturday afternoon here at Lincoln Park Stadium.
Kody Ganiko initiated the only scoring play of the game when he
sent a cross from the left into the box for Alex Arrington, who hit
a shot from four yards out just inside the near post at the 5:23
mark of the first half. It was his second goal of the
season.
George Fox had two excellent shots to knot the score in the
first half, both by Luke Andrew. His first
was a bullet from 25 yards out that hit the crossbar and glanced
away, and the second came from 20 yards away on which Pacific
goalie Zach Cohen made a fine stop.
In the second half, Adler Pottebaum had two good scoring chances
a minute apart for the Boxers, but George Fox netkeeper Elliott
Davis made outstanding plays to thwart both attempts. Davis
himself had a good scoring chance in the 71st minute when the
Bruins pulled him out of the goal to take a free kick in their
offensive end of the pitch, and he sent a hard shot straight toward
the middle of the net but right into the hands of Cohen.
Pacific held a 16-14 edge in total shots but George Fox put
seven on goal to six for the home team. Corner kicks were
even at five apiece. Cohen earned the shutout for the Boxers
with seven saves, while Davis made five saves for the Bruins.
George Fox ended its season with a 2-15-1 overall record and an
eighth-place finish in the conference at 0-13-1. The Bruins
have now gone 31 straight NWC games without a victory, going 0-29-2
in that span. Pacific, which lost several starters from last
year's conference championship team, wound up 5-12-1 overall
and 5-8-1 in the league, finishing sixth.
