TACOMA, Wash. - Boosted by a sweep of the three
doubles matches, the University of Puget Sound picked up its first
win of the 2010-11 season with a 7-2 victory over the visiting
George Fox University Bruins in Northwest Conference women's
tennis action Friday afternoon here at the UPS Tennis Pavilion.
The Loggers' Maddie Thiesse and Maddison Holtz prevailed
over the Bruins' Molly Beaumont and Cara
Griffith 8-5 at the #1 doubles, Logan Thompson and Marissa Friedman
downed Alyssa Emoto and Shaina Inn 9-8 at #2, and Jenna Gerdsen and
Ada Yu edged Liliya Abildayeva and Bethany Nguyen 8-6 at #3 to give
the home team a good start to the match.
George Fox rallied to take the top two singles matches, Beaumont
defeating Holtz 6-3, 6-2 at #1, and Emoto dropping Thiesse 6-1, 6-1
at #2. However, Puget Sound sewed up the contest as Gerdsen
downed Inn 6-3, 6-1 at #3, Thompson topped Nguyen 6-2, 6-2 at #4,
Yu nudged Griffith 7-5, 6-3 at #5, and Friedman bested Abildayeva
6-4, 6-3 at #6.
George Fox, which picked up a win back in the fall over Lewis
& Clark College, is now 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the
conference. Puget Sound is 1-2 overall and in the NWC.
NEXT: George Fox is off until next Friday, when
the Bruins will host Pacific Lutheran University in their first
home contest at 3:30 p.m. ... Puget Sound hosts Pacific University
Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
