WILSONVILLE, Ore. – Getting another
strong pitching performance from Andrew Snyder and
making the most of 12 singles on offense, the George Fox University
Bruins downed the Concordia University-Portland Cavaliers 5-1 to
finish 3-0 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference / Northwest
Conference Baseball Challenge Sunday here at Wilsonville High
School.
George Fox improved to 7-0 in the season, the Bruins' best
start since the 2007 club opened with 14 straight wins. The
Bruins have collected double digits in hits in every game.
Concordia fell to 3-5 with the setback.
The Cavaliers got their only run of the game in the first inning
off Bruin right-hander Joey Clancy, who worked only two innings,
allowing one hit with a strikeout and two walks. Odie
Hollingshed drew a lead-off walk, was sacrificed to second, went to
third on a passed ball, and scored on Riley Tubbs' grounder
to second.
Snyder (2-0), who threw six shutout innings to beat Concordia
University (Texas) in the Arizona Desert Classic last week, did the
same to Oregon's Concordia team this time, taking over in the
third and working six scoreless frames. He allowed only one
hit, walked one, struck out two, and retired the last 13 batters he
faced. Jacob Brown threw the ninth inning, allowing two hits
but no runs with one strikeout.
George Fox tied it in the top of the fifth as Derek Blankenship
walked, was sacrificed to second, went to third on Nate
Hickok's infield hit to the hole at short, and scored on
Taylor Hunter's single through the right side. The
Bruins took the lead in the sixth with four runs, all off Concordia
starter Josh Saio (0-2), who allowed 11 hits and a walk in 5.2
innings.
The winning rally began with singles to load the bases by Eric
Gantenbein, Josh Rapacz, and Derek Aldrich. Gantenbein and
Rapacz scored on a wild pickoff throw to third, then Todd Nagamine
bunted for a hit that brought Aldrich home. Hickok singled
Nagamine to third, and after a fielder's choice on which
Nagamine was gunned down at the plate, Hunter singled to score
Hickok with the final run of the game.
Hunter led the Bruins with three hits and two RBIs, boosting his
season batting average to .545, while Gantenbein, Nagamine, and
Hickok had two hits apiece. The Bruins also went without an
error for the fourth straight game.
