BEAVERTON, Ore. - Moving
indoors due to wet conditions and playing in the evening, the
visiting Whitman College Missionaries cruised to an 8-1 victory
over the George Fox University Bruins in Northwest Conference
women's tennis action Sunday night here at the Tualatin Hills
Tennis Center.
The Missionaries opened the match by sweeping the doubles as
Elise Otto and Alyssa Roberg ran past the Bruins' Molly
Beaumont and Cara Griffith 8-2 at No. 1, Emily Rolston and Kate
Kunkel-Patterson put away Alyssa Emoto and Shaina Inn 8-4 at No. 2,
and Lizzy Schiller and Leah Siegel shut out Liliya
Abildayeva and Bethany Nguyen 8-0 at No. 3.
Whitman won five singles matches, all in straight sets, to
secure the win. Roberg knocked off Beaumont 6-2, 6-1 at No.
1; Otto ousted Emoto 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2; Rolston rolled over
Griffith 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3; Kunkel-Patterson won the tightest match
of the day 6-4, 6-4 over Inn at No. 4; and Hadley Scherer handled
Nguyen 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6.
George Fox picked up its lone win of the match when Abildayeva
knocked off Maggie Eismeier 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5.
NEXT: George Fox (2-5, NWC 1-5) will try to
snap a four-game skid by stepping outside the conference for a
match with Hardin-Simmons University of Abilene, Texas, and the
American Southwest Conference Monday at 6:00 p.m. The match
is scheduled for the GFU campus courts following a 1:00 p.m. clash
between the men's teams from George Fox and Hardin-Simmons,
but both may be moved to Tualatin Hills if the weather is
uncooperative. ... Whitman (6-4, NWC 6-2) will play Hardin-Simmons
earlier Monday at 11:30 a.m. at the Club Green Meadows in
Vancouver, Wash.
