ORLANDO, Fla. - In a rare
college women's tennis match harkening back to bye-gone days
when the singles matches were played before the doubles, the Calvin
College Knights edged the George Fox University Bruins 5-4 by
winning the third and deciding doubles match Monday morning here at
the Lake Cane Tennis Center.
The teams split the singles matches to get started, Calvin
taking the top three and George Fox the bottom three in the
order. At No. 1, the Knights' Melissa Oosterhouse
downed the Bruins' Molly Beaumont 6-0, 6-4; Kaitlin Spoelhof
stopped Alyssa Emoto 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2; and Michelle Busscher beat
Shaina Inn 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3.
George Fox picked up singles wins at No. 4 as Cara Griffith
dropped Lauren Schlagenhauf 6-1, 6-4; at No. 5 as Liliya Abildayeva
put away Jordan Ipema 6-1, 6-4; and at No.6, Bethany
Nguyen downing Elise Doezema 7-5, 6-1.
Calvin took the No. 1 doubles as Oosterhouse and Spoelhof beat
Beaumont and Griffith 8-2, but the Bruins evened the match when
Emoto and Inn breezed past Busscher and Doezema 8-1. That
brought it all down to the No. 3 doubles, with the Knights pulling
out an 8-5 match-clinching win, Schlagenhauf and Bethany Zoerhof
edging Abildayeva and Nguyen.
The Bruins finished their spring break trip 2-2 and are now 4-8
overall. The Knight improved to 2-3 overall.
