NEWBERG, Ore. – David
Dillow has been named the Bruin Athletic Association
Men's Athlete of the Week and Northwest Conference
Men's Track Student-Athlete of the Week for March 14-20, and
Beth Stam was named NWC Women's Field
Athlete of the Week for their efforts in the Cal State
University-Northridge Multi-Events on March 17-18.
In addition, Kai Ojala in men's field and
Irene Johnson in women's track received
honorable mention for NWC Student-Athletes of the Week.
Dillow, a senior from Newberg, Ore., finished
second to former GFU All-American and older brother Ben in the CSUN
decathlon with 6,701 points, surpassing the NCAA Division III
National Championships automatic qualifying mark of 6,600 points.
It is the fifth-best decathlon score in GFU history. He posted
event wins in the long jump (22-0.25 / 6.71m), the 400 meter dash
(50.24), and the 1,500 meter run (4:32.66). He also came in
second in the discus (116-04 / 35.46) and the pole vault (13-11.25
/ 4.25m), took third in the javelin (155-04 / 47.35), and was fifth
in the 100 meter dash (11.43), the shot put (36-2.25 / 11.03m), and
the 110 meter hurdles (15.87). His marks in the long jump,
400, pole vault, 100, and 110 hurdles were all Northwest Conference
qualifiers.
Stam, a junior from Siletz, Ore., finished
third out of 14 athletes in CSUN's heptathlon with 4,470
points, an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. She earned her highest
point total by winning the javelin throw with a distance of 138-01
/ 42.08m, now the best mark in the Northwest Conference and an NCAA
provisional qualifier. She also placed second in the shot put
with a heave of 37-3.25 / 11.36m, another NWC qualifier that is
third in the conference, took fourth in the high jump at 5-1.25 /
1.56m, which is now fifth in the NWC, and placed fifth in the long
jump at 16-4.75 / 4.99m.
Ojala, a junior from Beaverton, Ore., finished
second in the high jump (6-6 / 1.98m) at the Point Loma Nazarene
University Collegiate Open meet on March 19 in San Diego, Calif.,
and was seventh in the triple jump (40-9 / 12.42m). Both
marks were NWC qualifiers.
Johnson, a senior from Portland, Ore., improved
her NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the 100 meter hurdles at
the Point Loma meet by knocking 15/100ths of a second off the
provisional time she already had, running a 14.84 that was good
enough to win the event. She also hit an NWC mark with a
12.62 in the 100 meter dash, finishing third overall.
