FOREST GROVE, Ore. - Taking five of the six
singles matches, four of them in straight sets, the Pacific
University Boxers pulled away from the visiting George Fox
University Bruins and went on to take a 7-2 victory in Northwest
Conference women's tennis Saturday afternoon here at the Holce
Tennis Courts.
The Boxers opened with doubles wins at the No. 1 and 2 spots.
Cat Goya and Megan Yoshimoto claimed an 8-0 win over the
Bruins' Molly Beaumont and Bethany Nguyen at No. 1, and
Stephanie Velligas and Rachel Mizuno defeated Shaina Inn and Cara
Griffith 8-5 at No. 2. The Bruins captured the No. 3 doubles
with an 8-0 shutout by Liliya Abildayeva and
Alyssa Emoto over Rachel and Sarah Palmer.
In singles competition, the Boxers won the top five flights.
Goya defeated Beaumont 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot, Yoshimoto downed
Emoto 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2, Mizuno squeaked past Inn 7-5, 6-3 at No.
3, Kelsey Trujillo won 6-2, 6-2 over Griffith at No. 4, and
Velligas edged Abildayeva in the No. 5 position 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 1-0
(11-9). George Fox's only win in the singles
competition was at the No. 6 position as Nguyen conquered Kelsey
Lack 6-1, 6-4.
