NEWBERG, Ore. - Beginning their final two-game
home stand that will bring an end to the 2010-11 season, the George
Fox University Bruins dropped a 6-3 decision to the visiting
Pacific University Boxers in Northwest Conference women's
tennis action Friday afternoon here at the GFU campus courts.
The Bruins got off to a good start, taking the No. 1 doubles as
Molly Beaumont and Cara Griffith
dispatched the Boxers' Cat Goya and Rachel Mizuno 8-3.
Pacific bounced back to take the other two doubles as Megan
Yoshimoto and Stephanie Velligas topped Alyssa Emoto and Shaina Inn
8-3 at No. 2, and Kelsey Trujillo and Traci Mo downed Liliya
Abildayeva and Bethany Nguyen 8-5 at No. 3.
The Boxers went on to take four of the singles matches to secure
the overall victory, posting wins at No.1, Goya edging Beaumont
6-4, 6-4; at No. 2 with Yoshimoto overpowering Emoto 6-1, 6-1; at
No.4, as Trujillo topped Griffith 6-1, 6-1; and at No. 5, Velligas
downing Abildayeva 6-1, 7-5.
The Bruins' two singles wins came as Inn dropped Mizuno
7-5, 6-3 at No. 3, and Nguyen defeated Kelsey Lack 6-2, 6-1 at No.
6.
NEXT: George Fox (4-13, NWC 1-10) closes out
its season Saturday at home against Willamette University at 11:00
a.m., and will be out to end a six-game losing streak in doing so
... Pacific (3-10, NWC 3-7) hosts Lewis & Clark College
Saturday at 10:00 a.m. before ending its season at Lewis &
Clark Sunday at 12:00 noon.
