GFU Last Chance
Results (M&W)
NEWBERG, Ore. – Irene
Johnson shattered the George Fox University record in the
women's 100 meter hurdles, one of several marks that met NCAA
Division III National Championship standards on the last day to
qualify, during the GFU Last Chance track and field meet Friday
afternoon here at Colcord Memorial Field.
Johnson cruised to the Bruins' new hurdles record in
14.34, the only NCAA automatic qualifying mark of the day and one
that would tie for fourth in the nation. She broke her own
George Fox record of 14.47 which she had set as a sophomore in
2009.
Alyssa Turner in the 400 meter hurdles was the only other Bruin
to hit a women's provisional mark with a time of 1:03.74, but
it did not top her best time this season of 1:03.03.
Other women's provisional marks in the meet were by Dana
Misterek of Whitworth University in the 800 meter run (2:12.73),
Anna LaBeaume of Linfield College in the shot put (42-1.5 /
12.84m), Erica Cox of Whitworth in the discus (138-1 / 42.10m), and
Kate Shear of Linfield in the javelin (141-7 / 43.16m).
In men's events, the Bruins' Dakarai Kongela
qualified provisionally in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.78,
which would put him 23rd nationally and in consideration for a
return trip to the NCAA nationals, where he earned All-America
honors last year by finishing sixth. The usual number of
entrants accepted for the nationals is around 16, but with
scratches, athletes competing in other events, and an expanded
field in some events this year, he still has a shot, though the
accepted entrants will not be announced by the NCAA until
Sunday.
Jon Udlock was the only other Bruin to hit a provisional mark
with a 194-11 / 59.41m in the javelin, but it was short of his
season's best of 199-11 / 60.93m.
The only other men's athletes to make provisional status
were David Oppat of Willamette University in the shot put (51-1.75
/ 15.59m), and Steve Collins of Willamette (179-8 / 54.77m) and
Alex Couette of Whitworth (176-7 / 53.82m) in the hammer.
NEXT: The NCAA Division III National
Championships will be held Thursday-Saturday, May 26-28, at Ohio
Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, about 20 miles north of
Columbus.
