OREGON TWILIGHT: Bruin Women's 4x100 Team Resets Own Record at U of O Meet

EUGENE, Ore. – Having broken the George Fox University women's 4x100 meter relay record once this spring, the Bruins' quartet of Emily Davison, Irene Johnson, Melissa Leighty and Alexis Arnold did it again with a time of 47.76 during the University of Oregon Twilight track and field meet Friday here at historic Hayward Field.

Entering this season, the Bruins' 4x100 record had been a 48.56 by Billie Bentley, Joy Butler, Amanda Burrus and Kelly Scrutton in 1994.  This year's group first topped that with a 48.22 in the Northwest Conference Championship on April 23 in McMinnville, Ore.  Their new mark, which netted them third place in the meet behind NCAA Division I teams Oregon and Portland State University, is a Division III provisional time that currently stands seventh nationally.

The Bruins' Beth Stam was fourth in the javelin with a throw of 138-7 / 42.25m, a provisional mark but well off her automatic mark of 150-8 / 45.93m at the NWC Championships, which ranks second nationally.  Johnson came in fifth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.68, a provisional mark only 6/100ths of a second off her 14.62 in the Pacific Twilight meet on April 30, which is tied for 10th in the nation.  In the 400 meter hurdles, Alyssa Turner ran a 1:03.05 to finish fifth, improving her previous provisional best of 1:03.94 enough to lift her eight places to 19th nationally.

In other good Bruin finishes which were not NCAA marks, Rachael Adkins took third in the triple jump (35-6.5 / 10.83m), while Angie Miller (17-6 / 5.33m) and Davison (17-5.5 / 5.32m) finished third and fourth respectively in the long jump.

The best showing in the men's events for George Fox was a fourth-place finish by Dakarai Kongela in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.83, 3/100ths of a second off a provisional qualifying mark.  The fifth-year senior was an NCAA All-American in the 100 last year with a sixth-place national finish but has battled several minor injuries trying to re-qualify.

The only other top five finish by a Bruin was Nate Dillow's fourth in the 400 meter hurdles with a 55.63.

Results of the Oregon Twilight meet are currently available on the University of Oregon website at http://www.goducks.com/fls/500/track/1011/twilight/index.htm?SPSID=4364&SPID=243&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=500.

NEXT: The final opportunity for George Fox athletes to qualify for the National Championships will be the Bruins' own Last Chance Meet on Friday, May 20.  Field events get under way at 2:00 p.m. with the women's hammer and men's shot and javelin, while track events commence at 3:00 p.m. with the women's 4x100 meter relay.
