Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. - Although they were out-shot
13-12 overall, the visiting Whitworth University Pirates put
two-thirds of their shots on goal and scored on half of those
opportunities, earning a 4-0 victory over the George Fox University
Bruins in Northwest Conference men's soccer play Sunday
afternoon here at the Austin Sports Complex.
George Fox controlled the action early on, taking five shots to
only two for Whitworth in the first 20 minutes. Luke Hammer
had two shots stopped by Pirate goalie Brian Sherpe and Brennan
Altringer one, while another shot by Brandon
Zebarth hit a post.
After those narrow escapes, the Pirates got on the board when
J.T. (Justin) Meyer, a senior who played at George Fox as a
freshman, scored his first goal of the season after a well-placed
cross from Cameron Bushey at the 21-minute mark. Just over
three minutes later, the Pirates made it 2-0 when Andrew French
scored his first goal of the year with help from Bushey and Meyer,
who were each credited with assists.
At the intermission, George Fox held an 11-5 advantage in
overall shots, but Whitworth had managed four shots on goal to
three for the home team. The Pirate defense allowed the
Bruins only two more shots in the second half, and none on
goal.
Kekoa Mountcastle iced the win for the visitors when he scored
both of the Pirates' second-half goals, his first two this
fall. At 53:10, he put in a point-blank shot after French
drove the right baseline and George Fox goalie Elliott Davis moved
to the corner post to defend against French. The final score
came at 72:53 when Will Wren sent a through ball ahead to
Mountcastle for a shot to the net's midsection.
Sherpe made three saves in goal for Whitworth in 80 minutes and
Nate Bell finished off the shutout. Davis had four saves in
81 minutes for George Fox before Jacob Baker closed out the game in
the net.
