NEWBERG, Ore. - In the 2012 season opener for
both teams, a strong showing in the doubles matches started the
George Fox University Bruins off toward an 8-1 win over the
visiting College of Idaho Lady Coyotes in a non-conference
women's tennis match Saturday afternoon here at the GFU
campus courts.
George Fox veterans posted wins in the first two doubles as
Molly Beaumont and Alyssa Emoto defeated the 'Yotes'
Hayley Hutchings and Shae Stults 8-4 at No. 1, and Shaina Inn and
Cara Griffith blanked Theresa Kucera and Cassie Low 8-0 at No.
2. In the No. 3 match, Chantelle Hadeed and Marissa Chau, in
their first college competition, outdueled Tanya Greenwood and
Nicole Camman 8-5.
In singles, Beaumont beat Kucera 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1; Emoto topped
Hutchings 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2; Inn edged Stults 7-5, 7-6 (9-7) at No.
3; Griffith dropped Greenwood 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4; and Alissandra
Wittrig, in her first college match, downed Balbine Umutesi 6-0,
6-3 at No. 6. The Lady 'Yotes' only win came at
No. 5 as Low got by Hadeed 7-5, 0-6, 1-0 (10-6).
“Shaina was terrific all day, and her match at No. 3 was
the key for us today,” said Bruins head coach Rick
Cruz. “Their girl (Stults) is a freshman who plays like
a No. 1, and they had some incredible points; some of their rallies
must have gone 30 or 40 strokes. Their tiebreaker was one of
the most exciting matches we've seen in years.”
