WALLA WALLA, Wash. – For the second match
in a row, Cara Griffith gave George Fox University
its only point at No. 4 singles as the visiting Bruins dropped an
8-1 decision to the Whitman College Missionaries in Northwest
Conference women's tennis action Saturday afternoon here at
the Bratton Tennis Center.
Coming off an 8-1 loss at Whitworth University on Friday, the
Bruins did not fare much better against the other conference team
on their eastern Washington road swing, though the scores were a
bit closer. The Missionaries started the match by sweeping
the doubles as Morgan Lawless and Emily Rolston edged Molly
Beaumont and Shaina Inn 8-6 at No. 1, Hannah Palkowitz and Maddy
Webster downed Griffith and Alyssa Emoto 8-3 at No. 2, and Kate
Kunkel-Patterson and Sara Finkleman nipped Chantelle Hadeed and
Bethany Nguyen 8-6 at No. 3.
Griffith earned the Bruins' lone win at No. 4 singles with
a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Erin Minuth, but the Missionaries owned
the rest of the match. Roberg clipped Beaumont 6-4, 6-4 at
No. 1; Lawless knocked out Inn 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2; Kunkel-Patterson
eclipsed Emoto 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3; Finkleman split sets with Hadeed
at No. 5 before prevailing 4-6, 7-5 1-0 (10-4); and Hadley Scherer
edged Nguyen 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-4) at No. 6.
NEXT: George Fox (2-5, NWC 1-4) plays its final
home match for almost a month on Friday, hosting Lewis & Clark
College at 3:30 p.m. ... Whitman (7-2, NWC 6-1) is off until
Tuesday, Mar. 20, when the Missionaries will begin a swing through
Texas at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, game time to be
announced.
