SPOKANE, Wash. – Winning every match
except the No. 4 singles, the Whitworth University Pirates had
mostly smooth sailing to an 8-1 victory over the visiting George
Fox University Bruins, who were playing on the road for the first
time this season, in Northwest Conference women's tennis
action Saturday here at the Scotford Tennis Center.
Marshall and Erica Bosman got the Pirates off to a good start as
they teamed up to win 8-0 at No. 1 doubles over the Bruins'
Molly Beaumont and Shaina Inn. Jessi Steele and Saryn Mooney
topped Alyssa Emoto and Cara Griffith 8-3 at No.
2, while Claire Hemming and Morgan McDivitt doubled up Marissa Chau
and Alissandra Wittrig 8-4 at No. 3 as Whitworth swept the
doubles.
The Pirates also swept the top three singles matches on the
three courts inside the Scotford Tennis Center to clinch the
win. Marshall defeated Beaumont 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles in
a matchup of 2011 Second Team All-NWC selections, Mooney raced to a
6-0, 6-1 win over Emoto at No. 2, and Steele took a 6-2, 6-2 win
over Inn at No. 3.
Griffith earned George Fox's only point when she defeated
Siri Carlson 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4. Hemming beat Chantelle Hadeed
7-5, 6-0 at No. 5, and Janell (Talbot) Lum rallied for a 5-7, 6-1,
1-0 (10-2) win over Wittrig at No. 6 to close out the match.
