Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. - A pair of first-half goals, the
first on a steal and score and the second on a well-executed cross
and shot, lifted the visiting Northwest University Eagles to a 2-0
win over the George Fox University Bruins in a non-conference
men's soccer match Monday afternoon here at the Austin Sports
Complex.
The Eagles of the NAIA and the Cascade Collegiate Conference got
on the board at 14:02 when Alex Taylor stole the ball from the
Bruin offense and fed it to Josh Peters, who broke through a couple
of defenders and rifled a shot into the net from 20 yards
away. It was his first goal of the season.
Fourteen minutes later, at 28:37, the Eagles got an insurance
goal when Do-Hee Kim sent a pass to Mackenzie Samuelsen, who
immediately crossed it from the top of the keeper's box to
the right side to Carlos Portillo, who then sent the ball inside
the far post from about 18 yards away. It was also the first
goal of the season for Portillo.
Northwest's defense denied the Bruins the rest of the
game, holding the home team to four shots in all and three on
goal. The Eagles took 15 shots, but most were from long
distance as the Bruins limited the visitors to just six on-goal
attempts. One shot by Samuelsen in the 83rd minutes skimmed
off the crossbar. The Eagles held an 8-1 advantage in
corners.
Luis Angel Del Rio, the son of new
Bruins' coach Luis Del Rio, got his first college start and
took the loss but made four saves in 45 minutes. Elliott
Davis played the second half in the net and had no save
opportunities. Joe Galbraith earned the shutout for the
Eagles by making three saves.
