NEWBERG, Ore. – In a match that took over
six hours to complete due to intermittent rain and a delay when the
timed lights went out at 10:00 p.m., the George Fox University
Bruins dropped their Northwest Conference women's tennis home
opener 6-3 to the University of Puget Sound Loggers Saturday here
at the GFU campus courts.
The Bruins got off to a promising start by taking the first two
doubles matches. Molly Beaumont and Shaina Inn, who are
ranked 11th in the NCAA Division III West Region,
defeated the Loggers' Maddie Thiesse and Josephine Dow 8-3 at
No. 1, and Alyssa Emoto and Krista Rey edged Logan
Thompson and Marissa Friedman 8-6 at No. 2. Puget Sound
secured the No. 3 win when Allison Embernate and Malia Ford topped
Bethany Nguyen and Aleassa Wren 8-2.
UPS came back to take five of the six singles matches, three of
which went to third sets. Thiesse came back against Beaumont
2-6, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1; Jenna Gerdsen edged Emoto 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 at
No. 2; Thompson toppled Inn 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3; Friedman rallied
past Chantelle Hadeed 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4; and Embernate knocked
off Alissandra Wittrig 7-5, 6-1 at No. 6.
The Bruins' only singles win was picked up by Rey in a
6-1, 0-6, 6-4 victory over Dow at No. 5.

Lutheran University Friday for a 3:30 p.m. match … Puget
Sound (2-0, NWC 2-0) goes to Pacific Lutheran on Friday, Mar. 1,
