NEWBERG, Ore. – With four singles matches
going to a third set, and with two tiebreakers needed in one of
them, the Pacific Lutheran University Lutes took a
tightly-contested Northwest Conference women's tennis match
from the visiting George Fox University Bruins Friday evening here
at the Sprinker Tennis Center.
George Fox got doubles wins from Molly Beaumont and
Shaina Inn 9-7 over PLU's Samantha Lund and
Payton McGriff at No. 1, and from Krista Rey and Ali Diehl 8-5 over
Catherin Miolla and Valery Jorgensen at No. 3 to take an early 2-1
lead. The Lutes' Leah Newell and Tina Aarsvold took the
No. 2 doubles 8-2 over the Bruins' Alyssa Emoto and Bethany
Nguyen.
In singles, Lund beat Beaumont 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 at No. 1, Newell
topped Emoto 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2, and Allison McClure took the
measure of Ali Wittrig 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 at No. 6. The Bruins got
victories from Inn over McGriff 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 3, and from
Rey over Niolla 6-3, 7-6 (7-0) at No. 5, evening the match 3-3 and
setting a showdown at No. 4.
Going against the Bruins' Chantelle Hadeed, Aarsvold won
the No. 4 opening set 6-4 before Hadeed took the second set 7-6
(8-6). With the team victory hanging in the balance, the two
players battled to another tiebreaker, with Aarsvold coming out on
top 7-6 (8-6) to keep PLU unbeaten at 3-0 overall and in the
conference. George Fox slipped to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the
NWC.
