SPOKANE, Wash. – Molly
Beaumont and Shaina Inn, George Fox
University's regionally-ranked doubles tandem, pulled off a
hard-fought win at No. 1 doubles, but the Whitworth University
Pirates picked off the Bruins in the rest of the matches for an 8-1
Northwest Conference women's tennis win Friday afternoon here
at the Scotford Tennis Center.
Beaumont and Inn, ranked No. 11 in the NCAA Division III's
West Region, edged Whitworth's Saryn Mooney and Taylor Pena
9-8 (7-3) for the Bruins' only point of the match, but the
Pirates captured the other two doubles and never looked back.
Morgan McDivitt and Megan Wingfield downed the Bruins' Alyssa
Emoto and Krista Rey 8-5 at No. 2, and Jessi Steele and K.C.
McConnell knocked off Chantelle Hadeed and Ali Diehl 8-1 at No.
3.
In singles, the Bruins pushed two of the matches to three sets
before the Pirates prevailed. At No. 5, McDivitt defeated Rey
6-2, 2-6, 6-1, and at No. 1, Beaumont won the first set 6-4 before
Mooney took the second by the same score. With the overall
match already decided by that time, the two played a tiebreaker
set, with Mooney coming out on top 1-0 (10-3).
The Pirates swept the other four singles as Steele stopped Emoto
6-1, 6-4 at No. 2, Pena dropped Inn 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3, Wingfield
won over Hadeed 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4, and McConnell downed Alissandra
Wittrig 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6.
NEXT: George Fox (3-7, NWC 2-6) returns home to
host Bellevue College (Wash.) in an exhibition match Sunday at 3:00
p.m. The next counting match for the Bruins will be Tuesday
when they host Linfield College for a conference clash at 3:00 p.m.

10:00 a.m. in an NWC match.
