WAIPIO, Hawai'i – After taking two
of the three doubles matches, the George Fox University Bruins
could not fend off the Chaminade University Silverswords in the
singles contests and got stuck with a 5-4 non-conference
women's tennis setback to start their spring break trip
to Hawai'i Thursday here at the Central Oahu Regional Park
tennis courts.
George Fox's No. 1 doubles team of Molly
Beaumont and Shaina Inn, who are ranked
No. 11 in the NCAA Division III West Region, improved to 10-3 on
the season as they took an 8-2 win over the Silverswords'
Melanie Schumilas and Roni Hewett. An 8-3 win by Ali Diehl
and Megan Dahlberg at No. 3 doubles over Isel Barba and Shayla
Hosaka gave George Fox a 2-0 lead before the 'Swords got one
back with an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles, Kimberly Takara and Jan
Matsumoto taking down Alyssa Emoto and Krista Rey.
The Bruins picked up singles victories at No. 2 as Emoto
hammered Hewett 6-1, 6-0, and at No. 5 as Rey eclipsed Barba 6-1,
6-3, but a fifth and decisive win proved elusive. Schumilas
topped Beaumont 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1, Takara toppled Chantelle Hadeed
6-0, 6-2 at No. 3, and Matsumoto mastered Inn 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4,
evening the match at 4-4.
With the outcome on the line, the 'Swords, who are members
of the NCAA Division II, picked up their first victory of the
season against 10 losses when Hosaka prevailed over Bethany Nguyen
7-5, 6-2 at No. 6. George Fox slipped to 4-9 on the year.
