LA'IE, Hawai'i – After
dropping their first two matches in Hawai'i to a pair of NCAA
Division II teams, the George Fox University Bruins refused
to come away from the island trip empty-handed and edged the
College of Idaho Lady Coyotes 5-4 in a non-conference women's
tennis match Monday here at the Brigham Young
University-Hawai'i campus courts.
The Bruins had defeated the Lady 'Yotes earlier in the
season 9-0 in Newberg, but this time their meeting was decidedly
closer. The Bruins' No. 1 doubles team of Molly
Beaumont and Shaina Inn, ranked No.11 in the D-III West Region,
quickly dispatched Shae Stults and Jaime Taylor 8-1, but the
Lady' Yotes took the other two doubles. At No. 2, it
was Hayley Hutchings and Emily Tesnohlidek 8-3 over Alyssa Emoto
and Aleassa Wren, and Tanya Greenwood and Cassie Low over Ali Diehl
and Bethany Nguyen 8-6 at No. 3.
The College of Idaho then took two of the top three singles,
with Stults stopping Beaumont 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-7) at No. 1, and
Hutchings downing Chantelle Hadeed 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-4) at No.
3. The Bruins' lone win in the top half of singles was
at No. 2, where Emoto blanked Jaime Taylor 6-0, 6-0.
It was up to the bottom half of the George Fox order to pull out
the win, and they did just that, all in straight sets. Inn
topped Tesnohlidek 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4, Megan Dahlberg dropped
Greenwood 6-3, 7-5 at No. 5, and Alissandra Wittrig won over Emilee
Chapman 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6.
NEXT: George Fox (5-10) is off until a week
from Saturday, Apr. 6, when the Bruins will host Lewis & Clark
College at 1:00 p.m. in a Northwest Conference match, their final
home match of the season ... The College of Idaho plays at
Chaminade University Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. Hawai'i time.
