Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. - All-American catcher
Josh Rapacz boosted his batting average to .600
with four hits and right-hander Clay Gartner threw seven solid
innings as the George Fox University Bruins took a 12-3 win over
the College of Idaho Coyotes on the first day of the Cavalier
Baseball Classic Friday afternoon here at Concordia
University-Portland's Porter Park.
Rapacz led a 13-hit Bruin attack with three singles, a double,
and two RBIs in five at bats, making him 12-for-20 on the
season. With the NAIA's 'courtesy runner'
for the catcher in place for the tournament, speedy Gabe Louthan
ran for Rapacz each time he got on base and wound up scoring four
runs. Lead-off man Matthew Zeller went 3-for-4 and scored
three times, while Danny Clifford collected two hits and a pair of
RBIs.
The Bruins broke on top with three runs in the top of the 3rd,
with Rapacz and Clifford delivering RBI singles, before the
'Yotes tied it with three in the last of the 4th, Mitch
Skaggs doubling two and scoring the tying run. However, two
of the three C of I runs were unearned due to a Bruin throwing
error on a potential double play ball.
The Bruins went ahead for good with two in the 5th, Louthan
scoring the first run on a throwing error on Zach Rapacz's
sacrifice bunt and Derek Dixon scoring on a sacrifice fly by
Clifford. The Bruins salted the game away with a run in the
7th, two more in the 8th, and a four-spot in the 9th.
Gartner (2-0) scattered five hits over seven innings, striking
out five with no walks. Christian Jarnigan and Sean Eberhardt
finished up with one shutout inning each. Kyle Garvin (1-1)
went seven innings for the 'Yotes, allowing 10 hits and six
runs, five earned, with four strikeouts and two walks.
Chase Miller had two of the College of Idaho's six
hits.
